Summary

  • Why end-to-end encryption matters

Rolo's multi-layered security starts with End-to-End Encryption (E2EE), which we believe is the strict minimum for any chat app that claims to be secure. Lack of E2EE means that the service provider may have access to your content, depending on how they handle your data.

  • Always E2EE messaging and files

Messaging and file transfers on Rolo are always end-to-end encrypted, which makes it on par with Signal and WhatsApp, and more secure than Telegram's regular chats and group chats which are not E2EE.

  • Your files and messages E2EE in the cloud

Rolo, Line and Telegram store your messages and files in the cloud, preventing loss of your communications when you lose or change devices. Only Rolo stores them end-to-end encrypted in the cloud, making it the most secure choice for this purpose.

  • Multi-layered security

In addition to E2EE, we have added the following security features to protect you and your devices:

    • Malicious URL detection minimizes phishing and malware.
    • Rooted/Jailbroken device detection prevents the app from running on a device with a modified operating system.
  • E2EE calls coming to Rolo in 2021

We're actively working on end-to-end encrypting all Rolo calls, and expect to launch these within 2021.

  • To open source or not to open source?

Open source means anyone has access to the source code of that application. Whether it is more secure to be open source or not is an ongoing debate. Rolo, WhatsApp and Line are not open source while Signal and only Telegram's apps (but not their servers) are open source. In addition to following security best practices, Rolo adheres to OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) Level 1, and we will undergo an external security audit in 2021.

Summary

  • Security ≠ Privacy

Security enables privacy but privacy can be abused by service providers by using that data for advertising purposes or even selling it for aggregation to third-party platforms. That's the major drawback of free solutions like WhatsApp and Line where your private data becomes the product of their services.

  • No phone number needed

Unlike most chat apps, Rolo doesn't require a phone number to start with, just an email address is enough.

  • No access to your phone's contacts needed

Rolo doesn't require access to your phone's address book to be used. Keep your address book and even your email address private from other users if you choose to.

  • Control your files' privacy

Rolo lets you control who can view and download the files you share. It's your privacy. You are in control.
